Xianjiyan Hiking Trail [仙跡岩親山步道] is located in Wenshan District [文山區], Taipei City’s southernmost district. The trail takes hikers up Xizikou Mountain [溪子口山] which stands at 143 meters and provides great views of Taipei City. The path is mostly shaded and not nearly as steep or as challenging as the Junjian Rock Trail [軍艦岩親山步道] I recently went on.

The weekend was one of those rare 2-day weekends because my students were busy at their regular school making up the day they missed on account of the holiday. It feels great to say, “Have a nice weekend” to my boss on Friday evening instead of on Saturday morning. We woke up early on Sunday morning to avoid the midday heat and headed towards the Dakeng Scenic Area [大坑風景區] in Taichung [台中].

Have some time to kill? The Junjian Rock Hiking Trail [軍艦岩親山步道] treats visitors to great views and gives a nice workout. The trailhead is really easy to find, just take the MRT to Qilian [唭哩岸] Station and you can’t miss the signs that point to the right direction.

Yesterday I wrapped up my third semester of Chinese classes. Our last class together was spent playing Mah-jong as our teacher watched in amusement. I have a week-long break before next semester begins. With my mornings free for now, I decided to do some hiking. This morning, I checked out the Tianmu Trail [天母古道].

Yuantong Temple, Taipei County


Once upon a time I picked up a copy of Taipei Metro’s Guide to Hiking & Cycling at an MRT station. After thumbing through it I told myself that I would hike every trail listed… then again, this was when I was only working 15 hours a week and wasn’t taking Chinese classes. So long story short, about a year after picking the guide up I’m still 0-for-12. Today I was going to change all that, so I took the MRT one stop south to Jingan Station.
