That’s beautiful. I hope nothing unintentional got set on fire. That is almost always the case with tiny islands, too many buildings, and the love of fireworks. 🙂
The first few shots of a fireworks display shouldn’t have too much smoke in them. Also keep in mind where you are shooting from and the direction of the wind.
THe problem I have faced always is that in my area they have only fireworks during new year, and often few people start shooting those rockets before “midnight”. As the climate is much colder here smoke/ fog builds up very quickly when there is no wind (which was the case probably the past 10years or so). So from the firework even the human eye sees usually only muffled lights somewhere up behind the smoke 🙂
That does sound problematic. My only guess is to get as close as you can to the launch site and shoot straight up!

Luckily, no damage to property or injuries were reported during this display.
I know that feeling.
This one ended up much more interesting than the clear shots but that’s probably because my neighborhood as a foreground is a little boring.
I never had luck with photographing fireworks, it always ends up messy as everything is full of smoke/ fog =(/
